Cima, Giovanni Paolo

Giovanni Paolo Cima (c. 1570 – 1630) - Italian composer and organist of the early Baroque, a contemporary of C. Monteverdi and G. Frescobaldi. Cima came from a leading family of musicians in Milan, he served as organist and head of church music in the church of Santa Maria presso San Celso since 1595. Later in 1610, he published the collection Concerti ecclesiastici, which includes a Mass, two Magnificats and six sonatas for 2-4 instruments. Like his generation companion G. B. Fontana, he died during the plague epidemic in 1630.
